Under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), most employers must provide their employees with unpaid leave for health care reasons, to aid a family member or for the arrival of a new child. Both employers and employees have certain obligations under FMLA.

Some employers, however, refuse to grant time off because they lack knowledge regarding the law or misinterpret its provisions. In other cases, the employee fails to properly document the reason for the requested leave time, leading the employer to refuse leave.
